America- A Nation of Immigrants and Migrants- including YOU!
As of now, the Federal government has shut down for lack of funding. Only the most critical services and agencies are being maintained until Congress passes a spending bill that will pay for the costs of government. How will this affect you? What will this cost? How long could this last? Those are questions that will be answered all over all news media as long as the shut down continues.
Why the shutdown? Politics. Republicans and Democrats can't agree about what to fund and what not to fund and what seems to be the biggest issue of disagreement is immigration. (This will be one of the issues we explore during our Mock Congress in February).
But not only is America a nation of immigrants- it is also a nation of migrants. People have moved across and throughout our country during the course of our history- taking their local and regional culture with them. There is talk that America is not just one nation- united, but is actually a jigsaw puzzle of 11 different culture regions. Check out this link- "The 11 Nations of the United States". That makes this topic personal.
In our nation of immigrants and migrants, where do you come from? When did different members of your family come to America? From where? How did your family end up in Aurora, Ohio? Where else in the United States are you connected? What is your family story? How does that make you think about immigration to America, and migration within America today? Which of the 11 Nations of America described in the article best describes the culture of you and your family?
This discussion will run for 2 weeks. If you post- please check back for comments and questions. If you post comments or questions, please check back and keep your discussions going.
